We expect all of our children to attend school everyday unless they are un-well. Absences from school should be kept to a minimum and where possible all appointments should be made for after the school day. If your child has an urgent medical appointment, please let us know in writing, prior to the appointment.

If a child is absent from school for any reason, we ask parents to telephone and inform the school before 9.30am .  On the child’s return to school, if 3 days or more have elapsed, a written explanation needs to be sent with the child so this can be entered as an official absence on the attendance register.

Please refer to the Health Protection Agency document below which provides advice about infection control in schools and recommendations about recommended absence periods for common illneses.

 Recommended Illness Absence Times

Good attendance is essential for children to take full advantage of the learning experiences available to them. They need to establish a commitment to work which will be carried forward into adulthood.

Good attendance is a vital component to a child’s success at school. Amendments made to the 2006 regulations in the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013 make clear that headteachers may no longer grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Parents can now be fined for taking their child on holiday during term time without consent from the school.

If there are exceptional circumstances behind your request you should discuss these with the Headteacher. If your child is absent from school because of a holiday which has not been agreed, this will be classified as an unauthorised absence and you may be fined or legal action taken against you.
